Acrylic on canvas. Brushwork. Representational magical realism.
There is something ‘terribly human’, in our longing to be lifted to be carried, elevated, saved.
But so often, the burden of that lifting falls not upon us, but upon those we’ve already broken.
Even in our dreams of ascent, we bind others beneath us. As a species we just can’t help ourselves. Historically sapiens have destroyed so much.
Here, the whale calf, exhausted and bleeding floats above a dark and restless sea, made to carry a weight never meant for her.
How long have we borrowed buoyancy from what we could not sustain?
How long have we asked the broken to carry us higher?
